And the Winner is ….
A few days ago I wrote about how I dumped TrendMicro off my main because of the problems this anti-virus product had given me. I could not decide what else to buy at that moment and so I tried the 90 day trial version of Microsoft OneCare as my next anti-virus software. Well, last night Microsoft OneCare was retired from my machine and I installed the free version of AVG. And it is not running 24 hours yet, but I am inclined to call AVG the winner. OneCare was horrible and slowed down my email POP3 traffic into Outlook 2007. When I download messages in the morning I am getting a lot of server maintenance notifications and I might have easily 70 or 80 messages that way. With OneCare installed I saw download times of 10+ minutes (TrendMicro 8+ minutes) which really sucked. With AVG the download task was done in maybe 2-3 minutes (Outlook 2007 is slow anyway for downloading messages via POP3).
So, this is a significant difference and a huge increase in performance that matters to me. I am even inclined to try the paid version of AVG in a week or so when I have better data to work with. By then I can tell if AVG keeps up the performance and I get a better feeling for how good it really works.
Disclaimer: AVG (free version) might not work for everyone as it only updates the pattern file once a day. I consider myself as an educated user and do not click on attachments or links when I cannot verify the source properly.
