Upgrade to Apache 2.x and PHP 5.x

Just a short posting today. Finally that task is behind me. Today I had my main server upgraded to the latest version of Apache and PHP – including the upgrades from Apache 1.3.x and PHP4. PHP4 is scheduled for “end of life” this year and the upgrade was inevitable. I was dragging my feet a little bit, but finally found a great system administration service today and man, did they do a good job. It was really refreshing to see good communication and excellent work. I will write a more detailed review about my experience later on this weekend and will publish it on my website “The Web Hosting Resource Kit“.

For now I am just happy how smooth this upgrade went. Only 2 websites had problems with PHP5. One problem was fixed by using a specific setting in the .htaccess file and the second one required a CMS script to be upgraded. I had this on my list anyway and had this out of the way. I will wait a day or two for everything to settle down before I declare this server upgrade 100% successful. I also have to monitor how the CPU load and memory behave now that the upgrade is done. The weekend is usually seeing less traffic and that gives me time to look into tuning of my configuration settings if needed at all.
